A number of Michigan basketball targets and commitments moved around in the latest Rivals rankings update for 2022.

After putting together one of the most productive summers of any 2022 recruit, it was expected that Tarris Reed, a Michigan basketball commit, would make a move in the rankings.

And when Rivals updated its rankings for the 2022 class, Reed certainly took a leap as expected, moving from the No. 90 player overall to 45th. The 6-foot-10 center/power forward from Missouri was dominant at the Peach Jam and showed off an array of moves offensively.

Reed who committed to Michigan basketball earlier this month, looked like a top-50 recruit and while he’s still ranked 66th overall in the composite rankings, his movement likely isn’t over.

"“He’s really boosted his stock this summer, especially with the offensive presence he has,” Rivals analyst Jamie Shaw said. “He has great hands, a big strong frame … he’s got all that. He’s very skilled … skilled with the ball, can shoot it. I saw him making pick and pop threes, trail [on the break] threes and that type of stuff.”"

While Reed is listed at 6-foot-10 via 247 sports, Rivals has him at 6-foot-8. The Wolverines other verbal commitment in the 2022 class is from point guard Dug McDaniel, who moved up four spots in the Rivals 2022 rankings from 75th to No. 71. Here’s what Shaw said about Dug:

"“He’s going to be a very interesting one. He’s crafty as hell with the ball, super quick, got a competitive nature about him and all that stuff. He’s just small. The shooting thing … I wouldn’t worry about that necessarily because he’s a fine shooter. He’s not going to be a scorcher at 42 percent, but he’ll shoot well enough that a defense has to respect him.”"

Size is among the first concerns always with McDaniel but his shooting ability is a question mark too. Some have compared him to Zavier Simpson in that regard. I think he’s a better shooter than that but we’ll see down the road at U-M.

Jett Howard, who should be the next commitment for Michigan basketball, or at least a member of the 2022 class, also moved up from 40th to No. 35. The 6-foot-7 wing is a five-star in my book but the rankings haven’t reflected that yet.

The biggest move by a Michigan target was made by Yohan Traore who jumped all the way to No. 4 in the rankings from Rivals. U-M is recruiting him and recently offered. The hope is to get him on campus and with the need in the frontcourt, Michigan seems comfortable taking two big guys.

Yet, here’s what Chris Balas wrote about Michigan’s chances:

"“We reported in an INSIDE THE FORT a few weeks back that the Wolverines appeared to be a long shot here, and we feel that way again after some short-lived optimism. He has yet to schedule a visit, and it could be hard to pin one down.”"

Colin Smith is a name that’s familiar to followers of Michigan basketball recruiting. He was off the radar for a bit but re-emerged recently and scheduled a visit in September. He is ranked 73rd overall, while Gregg Glenn dropped 26 spots down to 77th.

Smith is a strong-shooting forward with the versatility to play both the three and the four. Glenn is also versatile and can create, but struggles to shoot the ball.

Now that Smith is taking a visit, he makes a lot of sense, unless Michigan is able to make a move with Traore and get him on campus.
