An old 2022 target is re-emerging for Michigan Basketball
Another 2022 recruit is now set to visit Michigan basketball in September and it’s a name some fans will be familiar with.
There are a number of possible contenders for what is expected to be the fourth and final spot in Michigan basketball‘s 2022 recruiting class.
The Wolverines only have two verbal commitments right now in 2022. However, Jett Howard is expected to join the class at some point. Even this week more crystal ball projections came in for Howard who now has nine experts, including some big names, projecting him to U-M.
Juwan Howard has shown an incredible ability on the recruiting trail since taking over as head coach and the Wolverines have become a destination for high-end recruits.
A top-100 commitment was always viewed as a win for Michigan basketball and still should be. Yet, now, the Wolverines are getting the ability to get more selective.
It’s pretty clear that the Wolverines are looking for another big or at least guys who have the ability to play both the three and the four. Gregg Glenn is one name that comes to mind and he’ll be visiting Ann Arbor this fall.
Yohan Traore is another target to watch, as is five-star big man Ernest Udeh, who recently included Michigan basketball in his top 10.
Both Traore and Udeh have expressed interest in visiting but another recruit that will visit Michigan basketball this fall is four-star forward Colin Smith.
Colin Smith is back on Michigan basketball’s radar
Smith is a 6-foot-8 power forward ranked just outside the top 100 of the 247 sports composite rankings at 107th overall. And at one time, he was easily considered a top target.
Well, according to Endless Motor Sports on Twitter, he could be again as Smith has locked in an official visit to U-M along with Arizona State and Vanderbilt. He will visit on Sept. 24.
Notably, that will be after some other visits as Glenn and Jett will be visiting earlier in September. If you don’t remember much about Smith, here’s an excerpt of his scouting report from Brandon Jenkins of 247 sports:
"“Smith is a skilled stretch four-man that can really shoot the ball from the perimeter. He has a very soft natural touch and is a consistent catch and shoot threat from the three-point line with his high arcing stroke. His ability to stretch the floor is valuable and hard for opposing teams to defend.”"
It never hurts to add shooting and especially at the four spot. That would also give U-M someone to pair with Tarris Reed and other bigs down low who are of the more traditional variety.
About a year ago at this time, Smith told our Wolverine Corner that Michigan basketball was among the programs recruiting him the hardest.
Stanford was thought to be the favorite and his former teammate Harrison Ingram went there. However, Smith was once a priority for U-M and he could emerge as one again, depending on how things shake out with other targets on the board.
Things are pretty wide open right now and it feels like there are lots of moving pieces for the final 2022 spot with this latest development being among them.
