Georgetown

Michigan basketball has only matched up with Georgetown twice (0-2) and I find that a tad bit surprising considering they were two of the most prominent programs in the 1980s and 1990s.

Georgetown went to the national championship in 1982, 1984, and 1985, winning the title in 1984. The Hoyas also went to the Elite Eight in 1987, 1989, and 1996. Michigan won the national title in 1989 and went back to the championship game in 1992 and 1993. The Wolverines also went to the Elite Eight in 1994.

Michigan and Georgetown also have some of the most influential alumni when it comes to basketball culture. Juwan Howard and the Fab Five brought the trend of wearing black socks, black shoes, and baggy shorts to the college game.

Meanwhile, Allen Iverson went to Georgetown. By the time his NBA career was finished, he had many little kids wearing braids, headbands, and arm sleeves when they played.

Like Memphis, a matchup would also feature an interesting coaching matchup. Georgetown headman Patrick Ewing was a hall-of-famer during his playing days.

Unfortunately, that success has not translated to his coaching career thus far. In his first three seasons, Georgetown missed the NCAA tournament. However, a run in the Big East tournament last season earned the Hoyas an automatic berth and snapped a five-year drought. Perhaps it will jumpstart them over the next few years.

Between the nostalgia and seeing Juwan Howard coach against Patrick Ewing, Michigan playing Georgetown would be fun.
