Michigan football really needed some good news on the recruiting trail and got some with 2022 linebacker Jeremy Patton.

It’s no secret that things haven’t been going all that well in regards to Michigan football‘s 2022 recruiting class as some commitments and targets have been trending in the wrong direction.

Sebastian Cheeks picked North Carolina earlier this week and it’s looking like Dillon Bell could be trending towards Georgia after picking up a bunch of crystal ball projections to Michigan football following his visit in June.

Ja’Kobi Albert is also deciding soon and the 2022 defensive back seems to be trending to Auburn, despite having one crystal ball prediction to Michigan.

So you can see why Michigan football needed something good to happen on the recruiting trail and Thursday, that something happened in the recruitment of linebacker Jeremy Patton.

Patton is a three-star recruit out of Texas and is ranked 586th overall in the 2022 recruiting class. That alone won’t get fans excited, but Texas has been pushing hard for the in-state prospect along with Baylor and the Longhorns seemed like they had it locked up.

But according to EJ Holland of Rivals (subscription required), Patton canceled his plans to visit Texas over the weekend, which caused Holland to flip his Futurecast pick from Texas to Michigan.

Flood of expert picks followed

Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider had a prediction for Michigan to land Patton but recently dropped his confidence level.

That was before this news broke and now, Steve Wiltfong, a national analyst for 247 sports, has projected Patton to Michigan football too, as well as a number of other experts.

At 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, Patton, who is announcing his decision on Saturday, would be huge for the Wolverines.

Not only would it be a nice win in the state of Texas, especially with Texas and Baylor both making him a priority, but he’s also a former wide receiver who has great athleticism.

The Wolverines have been looking for more athletic linebackers in this cycle and Patton would fit the bill along with Micah Pollard.

Of course, no commitment is a sure thing until it’s announced, but right now, Michigan fans can feel really good and as we all know, it’s been much-needed.
