Michigan football added a commitment from a talented edge rusher on Monday and here’s what the Wolverines are getting in Mario Eugenio.

The state of Florida has been very good to Michigan football in recent years. Denard Robinson, Jeremy Gallon, Devin Bush, and Josh Uche are just a few of the notable Floridians to make the trek north to Ann Arbor for their college careers.

Mario Eugenio (Tampa, FL/Gaither HS) will be the next one in line after he announced his commitment to Michigan on Monday.

Eugenio becomes the 14th member of Michigan’s 2022 class and the first from the state of Florida. Michigan football extended an offer to Eugenio on February 22nd and the Wolverines quickly picked up momentum in this recruitment.

He took his official visit to Michigan on June 18th as part of Michigan’s “Victors Weekend” and it appears the Wolverines wrapped up this recruitment then.

The Wolverines began to trend on his crystal ball and he canceled his last official visit to Indiana last week. U-M is getting a talented pass rusher with 30 career sacks entering his senior season.

Here is how he fits into Michigan’s class.

EDGE Mario Eugenio

Size: 6-foot-3 240 lbs

Ranking: 247sports composite #282 overall, #13 EDGE, and #33 player in Florida

Notable Offers: Arizona State, Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Iowa State, Miami (FL), Missouri, Pitt, Oregon, and UCF

The Player: Eugenio has a good size for a high school prospect at 6-foot-3 240 lbs. He also runs track for his high school. When you combine his size and speed, it is easy to see why he is a terror to opposing offenses. He is explosive off the edge and relentless chasing after the QB in backside pursuit. Eugenio also has solid hands, including a swim move he uses to gain leverage and beat offensive tackles to the inside. He is also solid in holding up against the run at this stage, which will be important for him in staying on the field in all three downs and not just pass-rushing situations. He is comfortable rushing from a standup position or from a three-point stance. Eugenio has the size and athleticism to drop back into coverage and not be a liability when needed.

The Fit: As Michigan football transitions into a 3-4, Eugenio is an ideal fit to play the BUCK (standup OLB) position. With Michigan likely losing Aidan Hutchinson after this season and Michigan’s young pass rushers still unproven before the season starts, it is unclear at this stage how much Eugenio will be needed as a freshman.

However, I think he is good enough and physically ready to contribute in a pass-rushing specialist role as a freshman. As Eugenio matures, he will likely play in the 260 lb range to hold up in the rugged Big Ten. When Eugenio gets his opportunity to start, I think he can be an All-Big Ten performer.

dark. Next. 5 potential commits in July

Beyond that, I see an NFL future for him as well. Eugenio is the second edge rusher in Michigan’s class joining Kevonte Henry. Other EDGE targets include Joshua Josephs, Micah Pollard, and Joseph Adedire.
