Michigan basketball got bad news on two of its top center targets in 2022, however, there are other options, and here are the most logical for the Wolverines.

In his two years as Michigan basketball coach, Juwan Howard has gained a reputation for being one of the best recruiters in the country.

Well, that will certainly be tested as he attempts to find a top-caliber center/big man for the Wolverines 2022 recruiting class.

Michigan basketball seemed to be in a good spot with four-star center Donovan Clingan. But UConn turned the tide in his recruitment and was able to keep the in-state product home to play for the Huskies.

Jalen Duren, the top recruit overall in 2022, also was feeling U-M early on in the process. It was even thought that Michigan would be the favorite if he chose to play college basketball. Yet, when Duren released his top five list on Friday, U-M didn’t make the cut.

While it’s not ideal for the Wolverines, there are still some really good players left on the board. Michigan may need to expand its offers at the position, but here are some of the best options.

5-star C Dereck Lively

Michigan is still among the contenders for Dereck Lively, who is now ranked in the top 10 overall of the 247 sports composite rankings for 2022. He’s an elite prospect, but Duke, Kentucky, and North Carolina are all heavily in the mix.

Lively included the Wolverines on his recent cut list and has talked about taking a visit in the fall. If that happens, Michigan will have some hope but it feels like an uphill battle, especially against Kentucky.
