5 Wolverines that will benefit most from NIL Ruling
By Alex Hinton
Looking at the Michigan football players, as well as other top athletes at U-M, best positioned to take advantage of NIL.
July 1, 2021, will go down as a historic day in college sports history as for the first time ever collegiate athletes now have the ability to be compensated for use of their name, image, and likeness (NIL). In my opinion, it is long overdue as athletes are the backbone of college sports and the ones performing the labor in their respective sports to keep fans entertained.
It is unfortunate that former charismatic and legendary Michigan athletes such as Desmond Howard, Charles Woodson, Denard Robinson, Sierra Romero, and members of the Fab Five were among the many who were unable to reap the benefits of being able to profit off the use of their name, image, and likeness.
However, there are many current Wolverines who will be able to cash in. Here are five Wolverines that I think will benefit the most.
Hunter Dickinson
Dickinson is currently testing the NBA Draft waters and must first announce he’s returning to school. However as we have previously mentioned, that appears to be likely. Once Dickinson officially announces he’s staying in school, he could be set to cash in by the new NIL rules.
If Dickinson returns to Michigan basketball, he will be one of the top returning players in college basketball and likely a preseason All-American.
He will also be one of the favorites to win National Player of the Year. Michigan basketball will be one of the top teams in the country and favorites to win the national title. Virtually all of its games will be broadcast on national networks ESPN, FOX, CBS, and BTN.
When you combine these factors, Dickinson will be one of the most prominent college basketball players this season. He already has a large social following with19.2K followers on Twitter and 36.8K on Instagram. He is also charismatic in his interviews and on social media. Many companies will be looking to have Dickinson as a spokesman and represent their brands.
