What’s next in 2022?

Landing a consensus four-star point guard and top-100 recruit is a great way for Howard and Michigan to get things rolling in the 2022 class.

Remember, Isaiah Barnes and Will Tschetter got things started in 2021. While you obviously want the elite prospects, their recruitments take longer and you can waste a lot of time chasing those guys, as Michigan could have done with Jaden Bradley.

Instead, Howard took a really good player in McDaniel, and now he doesn’t have to worry about missing out on a critical position.

The debate really came down to McDaniel and Seth Trimble, a point guard/combo guard from Wisconsin who has also gotten crystal ball projections to U-M. That was before McDaniel committed and now Trimble seems like he will wind up at North Carolina.

It seems highly unlikely Trimble would consider Michigan with Dug committed. He views himself as a point guard and even at the two, there is no easy path to playing time.

So the focus turns to Juwan’s son Jett, who continues to improve and seems headed towards five-star status at some point. All signs are pointing to Michigan.

The next targets are four-star center Donovan Clingan, who also visited Michigan this week, and then maybe a 3-4 wing type such as Ty Rodgers or Eric Dailey, but adding Dug is a positive start.
