Michigan Football: Experts project transfer Daylen Baldwin to Wolverines
Michigan football wasn’t able to land to Jay Toia from the transfer portal this week, but the Wolverines are starting to feel like the favorite to land another.
This time around, it’s wide receiver Daylen Baldwin, who is transferring from Jackson State. He’s from the state of Michigan but started his career at Morgan State and then Jackson State.
Recently, he worked out for Ohio State and earned an offer from the Buckeyes. Soon after, he took a trip to Ann Arbor and got an offer from Michigan football.
Baldwin connected with Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis according to Sam Webb of the Michigan Insider and Baldwin discussed a decision that’s going to come relatively soon.
Baldwin said that his ability would be “maximized” on the field playing for Gattis, which is a really positive thing to say.
At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, Baldwin would certainly add another talented wideout to the mix and one that would rank as one of the most talented at his position in the transfer portal.
In just six games last season for Jackson State, he caught 27 passes for 540 yards and scored seven touchdowns.
Baldwin was part of the 2017 recruiting class and he played his freshman and sophomore seasons at Morgan State before last season. However, the 2020 season doesn’t count against players in terms of their eligibility so Baldwin should have a couple of years left to play.
Multiple crystal balls predict Baldwin to Michigan
While many expected Toia to wind up with Michigan football, there weren’t any transfer crystal ball predictions placed for the Wolverines. That’s not the case with Baldwin.
Allen Trieu put in a crystal ball for U-M on Friday and it was followed up by Sam Webb who did the same thing. There aren’t confidence levels on these picks such as with high school recruits but it’s still pretty significant.
It’s notable that Lance Dixon received a crystal ball projecting him to Michigan and he went elsewhere. But this feels like it’s going to happen and according to what Baldwin told Webb (subscription required) his decision will come within the next week.
The fit is perfect too.
Michigan has Ronnie Bell who is at his best in the slot, as well as Cornelius Johnson, who had a breakout season of sorts on the outside last season.
He’s 6-foot-3 just like Baldwin and having those guys along with Roman Wilson and Christian Dixon, could allow Bell to focus more on the slot along with A.J. Henning.
The fact that Ohio State offered Baldwin makes him a really good get for Michigan if it happens and it would be a nice recruiting win for the staff.
Again, let’s not count our eggs before they hatch, but this would be a really solid late addition and a guy with an ideal role waiting for him on day one as a Wolverine.
