Michigan Football: Wolverines target another in transfer portal
Michigan football is after another player in the transfer portal and that’s Alabama running back/wide receiver Keilan Robinson.
It’s a big weekend for Michigan football with Jay Toia, a highly-ranked defensive tackle in the transfer portal, taking a visit, but he’s not the only transfer the Wolverines are after.
It was also reported that Michigan football is among the programs expressing interest in Alabama running back Keilan Robinson.
Robinson sat out last season but played with Alabama during the spring and looked good according to head coach Nick Saban before he entered the portal. Here’s what Saban said via Rivals:
"“He’s doing great. He’s got great speed. He’s gotten bigger and stronger. He’s really playing fast. He’s playing really good on special teams. He’s a potential kickoff returner for us. He was before when he was a freshman, so that’s certainly a role, and he’s made great progress as a running back.”"
According to Brian Dohn of 247 sports (subscription required), Michigan football joined Texas, Maryland, Oklahoma, Cal, and Jackson State in reaching out.
The Wolverines have a connection in former Alabama co-offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, although there doesn’t seem to be a huge need unless Robinson plays wide receiver, which he started to do more this spring.
In addition to being a running back/receiver type, Robinson has return ability and we all know the Wolverines could use a return guy after Giles Jackson left via the transfer portal.
Texas seems like a good fit with Steve Sarkisian there, but much of it will probably come down to the depth charts and what sort of role will be offered.
It’s interesting that Michigan is in touch, but I wouldn’t expect Robinson to end up as a Wolverine.
Can Michigan close with Jay Toia?
As soon as Jay Toia entered the transfer portal, Michigan was among the favorites and quickly secured an official visit this weekend.
The question is whether Michigan can close?
UCLA, Utah, and Miami are among the other schools in the mix. Yet, Toia has a strong connection to U-M defensive line coach Shaun Nua and he also really liked the Wolverines during the recruiting process.
Remember, Toia was part of the 2021 class and entered the transfer portal after a really solid spring with USC. He enrolled early and was already on the two-deep.
So Toia could have a chance to make an immediate impact next season and since he plays at a position of need, landing him is essential. It’s time to close.
