Chandler Smith is among a few Michigan football targets who scheduled a visit to Ann Arbor but will not be taking it.

Michigan football has two wide receivers committed in the 2022 recruiting class but is obviously looking for more.

The Wolverines will be looking to add at least one receiver and since the 2021 class ultimately included just two receivers — Christian Dixon and Andrel Anthony — following Xavier Worthy going to Texas, even four wouldn’t be all that shocking.

One wide receiver in 2022 that’s been gaining a lot of momentum is Chandler Smith, a three-star recruit out of Orlando, Florida.

The reason is that Smith can absolutely fly. He was clocked running the 100 meters in 10.28, which is even faster than Worthy. Michigan football jumped in with an offer back in April and things were going well as Smith was set to take an official visit to Ann Arbor in late June.

But his recruitment has seriously started to take off. Florida was always in the mix and the Gators actually own the only crystal ball projection right now for Smith, but a recent offer from Alabama has changed the dynamic.

Smith now won’t be taking an official visit to Michigan and has eliminated the Wolverines from the conversation altogether. He named Florida, Arkansas, South Carolina, Georgia, and Ole Miss as his final five, but then Bama jumped in the same day, so we’ll see if that stands.

Ether way Michigan is out and for our purposes, that’s really all that matters.

A new offer at wide receiver

In a move that could be related, Michigan football has offered a new wide receiver out of Kentucky in the class of 2022 and that’s four-star prospect Dane Key.

Key is the No. 2 player in the state of Kentucky and is ranked 224th overall in the 2022 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings. He’s 33rd among wide receivers and he also has multiple crystal ball projections to Kentucky.

Key is 6-foot-2, 170 pounds, and is out of Lexington, Kentucky. His dad played linebacker for the Wildcats and it might be a tough pull.

However, Steve Clinkscale has a connection there from his time on the Kentucky staff and if the Wolverines can get him up to Ann Arbor for a visit, anything is possible.

Oregon and South Carolina are the other two schools in the mix and are listed as warm by 247 sports. Kentucky is the favorite.
