Michigan Baseball: U-M gets key win at Nebraska, awaits NCAA berth

The Michigan baseball team split with Nebraska on Saturday in what turned into a doubleheader. Now, the Wolverines will wait for their NCAA tournament berth.

Michigan baseball was supposed to play just one game on Saturday but ended up playing two and got a key win over Nebraska in the final weekend of the regular season.

In the first of two games against 20th-ranked Nebraska, Michigan, which was trying to avoid going into the NCAA tournament on a losing skid, got a stellar effort from pitcher Cameron Weston, who tossed seven scoreless innings, allowed one hit, and struck out four.

There wasn’t much offense by either team. On Friday, Nebraska shut out Michigan baseball and defeated the Wolverines 1-0. But Saturday in Lincoln, Tito Flores got two hits and drove in a run as Michigan notched an important 2-0 win. Flores also scored Michigan’s other run.

In the second game, Michigan baseball got off to a rough start. The Huskers scored four runs in the second inning and despite some chances later in the game, the Wolverines lost 5-3 to drop their second straight series.

U-M dropped two of three games to Maryland last weekend, so a sweep at the hands of Nebraska would have meant dropping five of the last six going into selection Sunday.

What to expect from the NCAA selection committee?

Michigan baseball fans won’t have to wait long as the announcement for the NCAA baseball field of 64 is set for Monday at Noon EST on ESPN2.

While it’s hard to know exactly where the Wolverines will end up, it seems like a strong bet they will get an at-large berth following a 27-17 regular season.

In the most recent bracket projection and the last one released earlier this week, U-M was solidly in the field as a No. 2 seed.

There are 16 teams seeded. Those 16 each host a regional and are the top seed in that respective region. Michigan baseball, if the projection holds, would be a two-seed in one of those regions, most likely the one hosted by Notre Dame.

On Sunday, Erik Bakich and company will know for sure where they are headed as they start down the path towards the College World Series.
