When Michigan football lost assistant coach Maurice Linguist to Buffalo, lots of fans were worried about the commitment of five-star cornerback Will Johnson.

But another immediate concern was the commitment of four-star cornerback Kody Jones, who joined Michigan’s 2022 class mostly due to Linguist.

Jones isn’t as big a name as Johnson, but he’s still a key part of the Wolverines 2022 recruiting class as the No. 319 recruit overall according to the 247 sports composite rankings.

Yet, when U-M hired Steve Clinkscale, it eased a lot of concerns about Johnson and Jones also said good things about Clink who has already reached out to Jones according to The Michigan Insider:

"“Steve Clinkscale’s first order of business after joining Michigan’s staff Tuesday was connecting with his inherited defensive backs commits. The goal — ensure they were both still in the fold, and enlist their help in luring others into it. Jones assured his new coach that he is all-in on both fronts.”"

Making sure things are solid with Jones was a smart move by Clink who had a relationship and had offered Jones previously. Here’s what Jones said specifically to the Michigan Insider about Clink’s addition to the Michigan football staff:

"“I think it’s a good pick-up. He recruited me when he was at Kentucky, and we kind of had a relationship going. Now he’s the new coach at Michigan. I just look at it like (I need to) come in on day one and impress him. Stay humble and be ready to work.”"

Jones sounds solid and said he was going to work on recruiting Myles Pollard, who Clink has been working on, which should make for a seamless transition.

Ohio RB sets Michigan visit

One of the things I love most about Clink’s hire is his connection to Ohio since he’s from Youngstown. The Wolverines absolutely need to do a better job of recruiting the Buckeye state and in one piece of good news, Ohio running back, Kaleb Johnson has scheduled an official visit according to EJ Holland of The Wolverine.

Out of Hamilton, Ohio, Johnson is ranked No. 593 in the 2022 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings. He’s also ranked 48th among running backs and 18th in Ohio.

Iowa State and Iowa are both strongly in the mix. The Cyclones actually have the only crystal ball projection right now and Michigan football hasn’t offered yet.

But, if the Wolverines offer Johnson when he visits Ann Arbor in June, that could completely change his recruitment. He’s also taking visits to Iowa State and Iowa that month.

The Cyclones offered him more than a year ago in March of 2020 but Mike Hart has gotten the Wolverines in the mix and he could be a strong candidate for the 2022 class if the offer comes down in June.
