Another target that makes a ton of sense to replace Linguist is a guy who’s already part of the coaching staff, just not in an on-field role and that’s Doug Mallory, who is currently a defensive analyst for the Wolverines.

Mallory is a former Michigan football player. He was a team captain back in 1987 and had six career interceptions. He’s also got a wealth of coaching experience — in the NFL, the Big Ten, and as a defensive coordinator.

Throughout his coaching career, which began back in 1988, Mallory has been the defensive coordinator for four different programs including LSU and Indiana. He coached with the Falcons in the secondary from 2015 until this past season, so he’s got the NFL background.

My biggest concern with him would be the recruiting aspect. Obviously, he will be familiar with it, but it’s been a long time, and Mike Zordich, the previous coach was one who was solid on the technical aspects of coaching but didn’t shine on the recruiting trail.

Mallory is a solid option, but he feels like a fallback.
