Michigan Basketball: How Devante Jones could fit with Wolverines
Michigan basketball fans have been wondering about who the Wolverines would pursue in the transfer portal and we have at least one answer in Devante Jones.
When it comes to the transfer portal, things can happen very quickly and on Tuesday, we found out that Michigan basketball has been in contact with another transfer guard.
The Wolverines are likely going to have one open spot for next season assuming that Franz Wagner declares for the NBA draft. If not, that would be great and U-M could just head into next season with what it has.
However, it’s highly unlikely that Wagner returns, considering he’s expected to be a lottery pick. There’s at least no way he falls out of the first round and it’s hard to walk away from that guarantee.
A few days ago, we laid out a few possibilities for Michigan basketball in the transfer portal, but another one has emerged in Coastal Carolina standout Devante Jones.
Jones was the Sun Belt Player of the Year last season and averaged 19.3 points and more than seven rebounds while also shooting 36 percent from deep. He’s 6-foot-1 and would likely come in as a starting guard for U-M. He also averaged more than three assists.
Jones spoke about his process right now and said he was still considering going pro. However, if that doesn’t happen he’s hearing from and considering Texas, Memphis, and Baylor. Here is what he told 247 sports about Michigan:
"“It’s Juwan Howard so that speaks for itself. I watched them play a lot last year and they did amazing things. They do good at having pro guys and producing pros so that could be a good opportunity for me to learn under Juwan Howard and pick his brain with him being around the NBA for so long. I can definitely see that being a big factor if I did decide to go to Michigan.”"
Jones is obviously a high-level scorer and would be a solid addition. Michigan also needs another facilitator and shot-creator and he could help fill that role.
He said he would put out a top three or top five soon and we’ll see if the Wolverines make it. But if he wants to play for a winner, few teams can offer a better situation.
