Michigan Basketball: 4 ideal fits for Wolverines in transfer portal

Michigan basketball has one roster spot available and a couple of needs it could fill in the transfer portal. Here are four ideal fits for the Wolverines. 

Unless Franz Wagner surprises everyone and returns to Michigan basketball for his junior season, the Wolverines are expected to have one spot to fill this offseason.

It could go to a 2021 recruit and U-M is a finalist for top recruit Chet Holmgren, who is deciding Monday. Yet, he’s expected to choose Gonzaga.

So it appears the Wolverines will look to the portal to fill that spot. It’s possible it could roll over to the next recruiting cycle, but this team does have some needs that could be addressed, specifically at point guard, backup center, and shooting, you can never have enough 3-point shooters.

With more guys heading to the portal by the day, there isn’t a shortage of candidates but here are four transfer portal targets that would make a lot of sense for Michigan basketball.

Marcus Carr, PG Minnesota

Marcus Carr is an obvious target if he decides to play college basketball next season. He’s still considering the NBA draft and if he doesn’t come back, it sounds like he could head to Kentucky, but with the Wolverines, he could be the point guard of a team ready-made to win.

If Michigan doesn’t add anyone, it looks like a solid top-10 team heading into next season. Carr averaged 19 points a game last season but did shoot just 38 percent from the field and is a 39-percent career shooter.

Yet, Mike Smith was much more efficient on a better team at U-M and that could be the case with Carr too. He would also play just one year, while the Wolverines bring along Frankie Collins.
