Michigan football isn’t having much luck in the class on 2022 when it comes to recruiting a quarterback and another target committed elsewhere.

For whatever reason, quarterback recruiting has been a struggle for Michigan football in the class of 2022 and the struggles continued Thursday.

That’s because a recent quarterback offered by the Wolverines, Alex Orji, a three-star recruit out of Texas, has committed to Virginia Tech.

It did seem like the Wolverines would have a legitimate shot at landing him when they offered a few weeks ago, but Orji received a crystal ball projection and committed to the Hokies soon after.

While the commitment of Orji to Virginia Tech takes another quarterback off the board for the Wolverines, it doesn’t mean that all is lost.

One thing that was notable with Orji was that he didn’t set up a visit to Ann Arbor. The Wolverines have been setting up a number of official visits with recruits for the month of June since the recruiting dead period is set to expire at the end of May.

Orji is ranked 560th overall in the 247 sports composite rankings. He’s also 11th among dual-threat quarterbacks. The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder is also ranked 83rd in the state of Texas, which tells you something about the talent in that state.

Even though Orji didn’t set up a visit with Michigan football, the Wolverines do have another three-star quarterback set to visit in June and that’s Nate Johnson.

Michigan football needs to zero in on Johnson

With no other viable targets on the board right now, Johnson is definitely the top target and even though he’s ranked 904th overall in the 2022 composite rankings, he still has a lot of upside.

Johnson is 6-foot-2, 183 pounds out of Clovis, California and one thing that has hurt his ranking was the lack of a junior season until just recently.

He’s a dual-threat option and has even drawn comparisons to former Michigan standout Denard Robinson.

It’s hard to say how accurate that comparison will be, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see Johnson’s ranking rise. U-M is very good in its evaluations so don’t worry about the ranking, just worry about Michigan getting a quarterback in its 2022 class.

With a long way to go before signing day, the possibility of expanding the board is always there too. However, with Orji and Drew Allar, another fairly recent offer committed elsewhere, that didn’t work out too well.

It’s probably time to try and close with Johnson, then focus on Dante Moore in 2023.
