Michigan Basketball: 3 Wolverines who should consider returning
Chaundee Brown
In my honest opinion, Chaundee Brown returning to Michigan basketball makes the most sense of anyone. Why? It’s simple, he didn’t even get to start last season.
Brown was one of the best sixth-men in the country and his attitude — the way he embraced it — was critical to the culture that made this team so great. Remember how the players swarmed him when he found out he was eligible for this season?
This group just had a great vibe to it and he was a big part of that. He went from being one of the best players at Wake Forest to coming off the bench and not even playing 20 minutes a night.
Brown could have easily averaged 30. Next year, he would be in that 25-30 minute range and I have no doubt he would be the starting two or three if he returned.
Originally, Brown was willing to be at Michigan for two years if he wasn’t able to play this past season, so it’s not like he’s running off to the NBA anytime soon. He could have a shot with his defense and 3-point shot, but you could make a case that a bigger role at Michigan could help him with that.
The Wolverines will certainly need more 3-point shooting and that could be something to target in the portal if Brown doesn’t return. His defense would be also be missed in a big way, especially if Franz Wagner and Eli Brooks are both gone.
Some people might be forgetting that Michigan is about to lose its 3-4 best on-ball defenders. If Michigan had matchup issues, Franz, Chaundee or Eli usually handed it, so that’s another factor to consider.
Fans often get caught up in the lost production of points, but in the case of Brown, Brooks and Wagner, their defense will be missed just as much, if not more.
If Dickinson returns, which I think he will, and you’re able to bring back a couple of these seniors and sprinkle them in with the incoming talent, Michigan could be really dangerous next season.
So hopefully, some of these guys are at least considering it and after all, Brown and Smith should at least play one season with the Maize Rage going nuts behind them at Crisler.
