Ambry Thomas talks new defense

Ambry Thomas, like Collins, opted out of playing last season. He had good reason to with his previous medical issues and now, he’s preparing for the NFL draft.

His focus is obviously on capturing the attention of NFL scouts and teams that might be overlooking him since he didn’t play for Michigan football last season, but when he met with media, he also said this about Mike Macdonald’s new defense:

"“I’m excited to see what’s about to happen because a lot of the guys love the new defense. They all tell me that if I played in this defensive scheme I would have ate, so I’m excited to see those guys eat. They’re actually learning an NFL scheme defense.”"

Thomas says that he would have “ate” in the new defense, which means, he would have dominated. But it’s good to hear that the players like the new scheme.

That could keep someone from Daxton Hil from leaving the program via the transfer portal. That was rumored at one time but now doesn’t seem likely. And with Gemon Green, Vincent Gray, as well as second-year guys such as Andre Seldon and Darion Green-Warren, I’m optimistic about the secondary, especially after hearing what Thomas had to say.

It’s going to be hard to judge what Michigan is going to look like defensively until we actually see games, but there is talent on the defensive side of the ball. It’s up to Macdonald to utilize it.
