Michigan football has offered a new quarterback recruit in the class of 2022 and there are a few reasons why this could be the one for the Wolverines.

As far recruiting the quarterback position is concerned, it’s been a bit of an adventure for the Michigan football team in the class of 2022.

A number of the Wolverines top targets at the position have already committed to other schools or are trending heavily in that direction.

Even some of the recent offers such as Ohio four-star quarterback Drew Allar ended up going elsewhere (Penn State) in short order.

That’s left Michigan football scrambling a bit as quarterbacks seem to be coming off the board left and right.

Last week, we looked at how three-star quarterback Nate Johnson out of California was starting to emerge as possibly the top option on the board for Michigan.

Johnson is a low-ranking three-star prospect but one that didn’t have the advantage of a fall season and a guy who could easily move up the rankings.

But in terms of being the top quarterback recruit for 2022, that might not be the case anymore following the offer extended to 2022 quarterback Alex Orji on Tuesday.

Orji is a dual-threat quarterback out of Sachse, Texas. He’s 6-foot-2, 205 pounds and is ranked as the No. 555 prospect overall according to the 247 composite rankings for 2022.

Orji has a number of Power-5 offers including other programs in the Big Ten such as Nebraska and Minnesota, as well as Baylor, TCU, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma and others.

However, on his 247 sports profile, none of those schools are listed as warm in terms of their recruitment, so it seems like there is an opening for the Wolverines.

Orji also told the Michigan Insider via Brice Marich, he has “tons of excitement” about the offer.

Marich also notes that Maurice Linguist could play a key role in this recruitment and Orji told the Michigan Insider (subscription required) that Linguist has known his family for years.

Linguist is from Texas and recently was a coach for the Dallas Cowboys, following his years coaching at Texas A&M.

Recruiting is all about relationships and it’s clear that Linguist had a good in here and U-M took advantage of it. Jim Harbaugh has been involved and from the looks of things, Orji could wind up being the top target at quarterback in the class of 2022.

At the very least, he’s another candidate to take up that spot.
