Michigan football kept the in-state recruiting momentum going on Wednesday with the commitment of four-star wideout Tay’shawn Trent.

While there is still plenty of work for Michigan football to do in the 2022 recruiting class, the Wolverines took a big step forward Wednesday with the addition of four-star wide receiver Tay’shawn Trent.

Out of East Detroit, Trent’s commitment comes on the heels of Michigan football landing five-star cornerback Will Johnson last week and it’s likely that the addition of Johnson, helped with Trent, who began trending with crystal ball picks to U-M last week.

Ranked as the No. 281 prospect in the class of 2022 according to the 247 sports composite rankings, Trent is also ranked seventh in the state of Michigan and was once thought to be a Michigan State lean, which makes this a nice recruiting win for Jim Harbaugh and company.

Trent will be ready to play, at least physically, as soon as he steps on campus. He’s listed as 6-foot-4, 205 pounds, and here’s a look at the scouting report of the seventh-ranked recruit in the state of Michigan for 2022. This is from Allen Trieu of 247 sports:

"“Big, physical receiver prospect. Verified at over 6-foot-3 and over 210 pounds. Is not just big, but knows how to use his size and strength to his advantage. High points the ball well and out-bodies and out-muscles defensive backs for the position. Does an excellent job of getting up in the air but also being aware of his feet along sidelines and backs of end zones. Generally good body control. Not a speed demon, but does show ability after the catch. At the least, will be a big time red-zone weapon.”"

Michigan has been looking to recruit some bigger wide receivers and while it added some talented guys at the position in 2021 such as Christian Dixon, Andrel Anthony, and Xavier Worthy, none have the big presence that Trent will bring.

The most recent comparison of Michigan receivers would probably be Nico Collins, another 6-foot-4 pass-catcher who excelled at getting deep. Trent has a lot of the same characteristics. Improving his speed will be key, but Michigan needed a big guy to go over the middle and Trent provides that.

Trent’s commitment gives Michigan football seven in the class of 2022. The Wolverines are currently ninth in the country according to the 247 sports composite team rankings and third in the Big Ten.
