While the Michigan football program signed two running backs in the 2021 recruiting class there could be another that the Wolverines are interested in after some strange circumstances.

Recruiting is getting crazier and crazier and with all the movement among coaches, the movement among players is getting more and more pronounced.

Michigan football has experienced this with a number of its own players leaving in the transfer portal, with the most recent being former starting quarterback Joe Milton.

However, with some programs, recruits are leaving after they have signed but before they have ever stepped on campus and Tennessee is the best example of that as multiple 2021 signees have asked out of their letters of intent.

One of those in the class of 2021 was four-star running back Cody Brown. He was given his release and a number of programs are expressing interest in him, including Michigan football according to Adam Gorney of Rivals (subscription required).

Brown is listed as the No. 232 overall prospect in the 2021 class according to 247 sports and he is the No. 10 running back overall. He’s out of Lilburn, Georgia and it will be interesting to see if the Wolverines extend an offer because they didn’t during the normal recruiting cycle.

Brown actually committed to Tennessee back in May of 2020. That was when the Vols were led by former head coach Jeremy Pruitt who was fired after the season. Josh Heupel has taken over as the Vols’ head coach and some recruits have wanted out as a result.

A number of Tennessee players have hit the transfer portal and some were even connected to Michigan football, so it’s not a shock that U-M would have some interest in Brown, besides the fact that Donovan Edwards and Tavierre Dunlap already signed.

Brown is a big back at 6-foot, 217 pounds and it’s possible the Wolverines could view this as a chance to get a jumpstart on the 2022 class. Brown would be a late addition and wouldn’t be able to enroll early.

One thing we’ve learned over the years is that in today’s world of college football, you can never have too many talented players. Michigan’s running back room is loaded now, but it doesn’t take long to change that and a dynamic, physical runner like Brown would be hard to pass up.
