It was only a matter of time before John Beilein, the legendary former Michigan basketball coach, started coming up as a possibility for head-coaching jobs in Division I basketball.

And while some Michigan basketball fans were worried that Howard Eisley could become a candidate for the Boston College job and he certainly still could, there are reports that Beilein is a target of the Eagles according to multiple college basketball insiders according to 247 sports such as Jerry Meyer, Andy Katz and others.

Here’s what Meyer said on his podcast about Beilein following his tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers that ended after less than one full season.

"“Without a doubt, he would highly sought-after to re-enter the college ranks. It’s an unfortunate situation. I thought there was a real chance it would be a Brad Stevens situation when Brad Stevens got the Celtics job. … I kind of envisioned a scenario like that with John Beilein, but it certainly did not happen.”"

Beilen did an incredible job when he was Michigan basketball’s head coach and even without recruiting high-level talent, at least in terms of recruiting rankings (most of the time), he turned Michigan into a blue blood and sent tons of players he helped develop and find, such as Duncan Robinson to the NBA.

The Wolverines made two Final Fours and two National Championship game appearances. Under his direction, U-M made the NCAA tournament nine times in 12 seasons, including nine of the last 11. He also led Michigan to a pair of Big Ten regular-season titles and a pair of tournament titles.

During his last seven seasons at the helm, he made the Sweet 16 five times and Boston College or any other program would be right to hire him.

The question is whether or not Beilein would take the job?

He’s currently working for the Big Ten Network, as an analyst and doing a great job. Maybe that will be enough to keep his basketball interests satisfied.

At the same time, if he wants to return, the Eagles would be nuts to hire anyone else and while it’d be weird to see him back in the college game and not at Michigan, I wish him all the best.

Whatever he decides to do.
