Michigan Football: Breaking down recent offers in 2023 and 2024
The Michigan football program continues to be aggressive on the recruiting trail with the new additions of its coaching staff and just in the last couple of days, the Wolverines have extended a number of offers in the 2023 and 2024 classes.
One of those offers was actually to the grandson of former Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr. That’s CJ Carr, a pro-style quarterback in the class of 2024.
Another in-state offer went out in the class of 2024 and that’s to Kari Jackson, a 6-foot-1 215-pound linebacker out of West Bloomfield, Michigan, the high school that wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy was the head coach.
Jackson is only going to be a sophomore, but Michigan State already offered him and it was smart of the Wolverines to get in the mix. Here’s what Jackson told The Michigan Insider about his offer from the Wolverines:
"“It was extra special getting a chance to talk to Coach Bellamy again. Receiving the Michigan offer from him was unbelievable. To receive an offer is very humbling. It means that my hard work has a chance to pay off when a prestigious school like Michigan takes the time to acknowledge my potential.”"
Another in-state offer that went out in the class of 2023 was to Cass Tech defensive end Jalen Thompson, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound strong-side end that is unranked right now by 247 sports.
Thompson has offers from Michigan State and Kentucky, as well as Central Michigan and Toledo, but it was clear from what he told the Michigan Insider that the Wolverines offer was impactful.
“I’m very interested because I grew up watching them to this day and I love how they make you feel welcomed. The whole program is good at what they do,” Thompson said.
These offers are important and it’s good to see Michigan actually beating Michigan State to the punch with some of its in-state offers. And you can already see the benefit that Ron Bellamy is having on in-state recruiting.
Early offers to Alabama recruits
However, the staff is also working on some recruits in the state and offered a pair of recruits from Alabama in the class of 2024, including defensive back Christian Peterson who got his first offer from the Wolverines.
While the Wolverines were the first program to offer Peterson, which is significant, especially in the state of Alabama, they are also one of the first to offer Kavion Henderson, a defensive end out of 2024 that also has offers from Michigan State, Tennessee and Georgia.
The sophomore to be in high school is 6-foot-3, 208 pounds and already looking like a national recruit out of Leeds, Alabama.
It will be interesting to see how successful the push in Alabama will be for Michigan football, but it seems like the Wolverines and others are going for some of those prospects that are less prioritized by Alabama.
We’ll see how that works but it’s good to see Michigan being more proactive, especially at the in-state level.
