Give credit to Juwan, coaches

Juwan Howard was an obvious coach of the year candidate both nationally and in the Big Ten and Sunday’s win should only further that candidacy.

Every program has had to go through immense challenges this season, but you really have to be impressed with how Howard and the Wolverines were able to navigate this pause.

Michigan wasn’t even able to practice for two weeks and then, the first game back was on the road against a nationally-ranked team with a 9-5 record in the Big Ten. It would have been understandable had Michigan lost, but Howard and his staff were exceptional.

Down by 12 at halftime, the Wolverines adjusted and applied more pressure on the ball in the second half. That got Wisconsin out of its rhythm, while also forcing turnovers.

The work the coaching staff has done with Hunter Dickinson defensively is noticeable. His ability to defend ball screens, even switching onto point guards as Jon Teske used to, was huge yesterday. He went from a defensive liability to blocking five shots and playing an essential role.

But more than anything, you have to appreciate the culture Howard has built.

When Michigan was coming back yesterday, the Wisconsin bench, in its home gym, was silent. The Wolverines were chanting “defense” and clapping — cheering each other on. It’s just a different dynamic and when Howard describes this team as a family, he means it.

Whether it’s an in-game strategy, leadership, or inspiring his team, Howard is pressing all the right buttons and it’s something to behold.
