Championship-level defense

It’s not like we didn’t know that Michigan basketball was an elite defensive team before Sunday’s win at Wisconsin, but man, that performance was really the cherry on top of what’s been a really impressive season defensively.

The Wolverines are leading numerous defensive categories in the Big Ten, but yesterday was the first time the defense really carried Michigan to a win against a really good team.

It was only the second time this season that the Wolverines have been held under 70 points and the defense responded exactly how it did the first time that happened this season — it held the opponent under 60 points.

Michigan was able to beat Penn State 62-58 earlier in the year, but this even eclipsed that performance. The Badgers basically scored less than a point per minute down the stretch, forget a point per possession.

The Badgers ended up shooting just 42 percent on 2-pointers and made just six treys after connecting on five in the first half.

Michigan basketball put on a clinic and the defense is still the best hope this team has of cutting down the nets in March and April in Indy.
