Michigan Football: What Joshua Burnham’s top 3 means for Wolverines
One of Michigan football’s top 2022 recruiting targets is Joshua Burnham, who released his top three on Thursday and included U-M. Here’s our analysis.
There’s no question that as far as the 2022 recruiting class is concerned, outside linebacker/athlete Joshua Burnham is one of Michigan football‘s top targets.
Not only is Burnham the second-ranked player in the state of Michigan, but he’s also ranked 114th overall in the 2022 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings and is listed as the ninth-best outside linebacker.
At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, Burnham is an exceptional athlete and has played both ways out of Traverse City, Michigan and has played quarterback too. He’s also viewed as a possible tight end.
The Wolverines have been the crystal ball favorite for Burnham for months now and own all of his predictions from 247 sports with five of them logged for U-M with a confidence level of six.
While the poor regular season might have hurt Michigan’s chances for a while, the Wolverines seem to have rebounded as they made their way into Burnham’s top three on Thursday, a list that also included Notre Dame and Wisconsin and notably, not Alabama or Ohio State.
What the list means for Michigan football
The Wolverines are now open to Burnham playing on the offensive side of the ball if he wants, believing he’s just an elite recruit no matter what position, but he’s got great size to play that hybrid outside linebacker role and serve as an edge rusher in Michigan’s new defense.
Notre Dame shouldn’t be discounted. After all, the Fighting Irish came into Michigan and landed Rocco Spindler, a top-100 offensive lineman in the 2021 cycle and in my eyes, they are definitely the biggest threat to steal this recruitment away from the Wolverines.
Wisconsin is another really solid program but the Badgers haven’t been able to land a ton of talent in the state of Michigan, although the Badgers were able to land Logan Brown, the top recruit in Michigan in 2019 and also a top-20 offensive tackle.
However, at this point, I feel pretty confident in Michigan’s chances of landing Burnham. With Mike Hart and Ron Bellamy on board, in-state recruiting should only improve and even without those additions, Michigan has been the heavy favorite in this recruitment and that hasn’t changed.. I’d be surprised if he wound up anywhere else.
