Harbaugh’s moves paying off

The moves over the past week have made Michigan’s class look much better in 2021. The Wolverines added three defensive tackles and two four-star recruits on defense.

Michigan has 13 four-star recruits out of 23 signees which gives them a 57 percent mark in the blue-chip ratio, which is a very solid number. Anything over 50 is good and it refers to the number of four-star prospects out of the total number in the class.

And looking back, Michigan killed it on early signing day and on signing day. Back in December, Michigan was able to get Xavier Worthy, Donovan Edwards, Ja’Den McBurrows and Jaydon Hood, while this time around, Rooks was landed just a few days before, followed by Benny and Iwunnah Wednesday morning.

Many questioned the decision to keep Shaun Nua, but he answered those critics by landing Rooks and Benny. Back in the summer, that was the hope and he delivered.

He was also assisted by Ronald Bellamy, who has a great reputation in the state of Michigan and proved to be an asset already in the Benny recruitment. Mike Macdonald also assisted in the recruitment of Rooks and it’s safe to say the recruiting emphasis in the hires is paying off.

The class isn’t without its issues. There are only two three-star defensive backs and while both should be solid players, the numbers aren’t where they need to be. I don’t think Michigan ever wants a class with just one corner and one safety.

The signing period isn’t over. Kids will have months to sign and someone could emerge in the late period but it’s not very likely at this point and it would have to be a real diamond in the rough.

Michigan still needs to add talent in the transfer portal at multiple positions, but the defensive line haul (DE’s included) is really impressive, as are the additions in the linebacking group.

If not for the efforts on both signing days, Michigan would have just two four-star recruits in its 2021 class. Now, the Wolverines have five and some definite momentum heading into 2022.
