Jim Harbaugh has added another coach to his Michigan football staff, although this new hire, Garrett Cox, won’t be an on-field coach.

Instead, Cox will be a defensive quality control assistant and even though there wasn’t an announcement about his hire, his Twitter profile reflects his new title.

Cox spent the last two years on the staff of Jeremy Pruitt in Tennessee before Pruitt was fired following a tough season and also some possible NCAA violations.

Prior to working at Tennessee, Cox served on the staff of Nick Saban as a quality control assistant for four years. However, he does have on-field coaching experience and according to his profile with Tennessee, he was the linebackers coach at Texas Southern and also Fort Scott CC.

Quality control assistants aren’t always a big thing to get excited about, but it’s another sign that Harbaugh meant it when he said he was going to take a hard look at what was going wrong.

And even though teams are limited in the number of on-field assistant coaches they can hire, there is no limit on quality control guys or the new chief of staff right you are starting to see.

Michigan football could probably use one of those too. It’s obvious that the Wolverines need to add more to the recruiting operation and make it comparable with programs such as Ohio State, Texas and the SEC.

At any rate, the move of Cox is an interesting one because of Michigan football’s reported interested in a pair of Tennessee transfers.

There hasn’t been much movement there but  Quavaris Crouch was a former recruit of the Wolverines and they were a finalist when he chose Tennessee. And now he will have a familiar coach on staff.

Henry To’o To’o is another guy that made a lot of sense and who knows, Cox addition could be helpful, but either way, it’s going to be good to have a guy with his experience.

Plus, even if Michigan football does miss out on the Tennessee transfers, there are many other talented players entering the portal all the time and the staff seems pretty determined about making some additions.
