It was only a matter of time before Michigan football experienced some attrition in its 2022 class with the departure of defensive coordinator Don Brown and the shoe finally dropped Thursday with the decommitment of four-star linebacker Tyler Martin.

Martin is ranked as the No. 278 player overall and the No. 9 inside linebacker in the class of 2022 and as a recruit out of Massachusetts, it’s not shocking to see him not stick and he announced his decision on Twitter Thursday.

Here’s a quote from Martin via 247 sports:

"“My recruiting process began in eighth grade. It’s been a long journey filled with ups and downs, but an experience that I wouldn’t trade for the world. What I’ve learned most is that the recruiting process mirrors life; it’s about values and relationships. With changes to the defensive staff at Michigan, I believe it is important for me and only fair to Michigan to reopen my recruitment and continue to build relationships.”"

Martin spelled it out very clearly in his announcement that this decision had to do with staff changes at Michigan and while it’s disappointing, it’s just the way the process works.

Can Michigan football turn it around?

Recruits commit to coaching staffs and with a drastic change like Michigan football has undertaken, it’s not shocking to see some attrition. Martin did recently speak with the new defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, so Michigan football could still have a shot.

But more often than not, when players decommit, they wind up going somewhere else and Martin will have no shortage of suitors as one of the top players in the Northeast.

"“I would like to thank the Michigan coaches, family and community for their support and I will build a relationship with their new staff,” Martin said. “I look forward to rekindling old relationships and forging new ones.”"

While I don’t necessarily think Michigan football would be the favorite going forward, the Wolverines should still have a shot here with teams like Virginia, Nebraska, Syracuse and Arkansas among the other contenders.

Brown is now the defensive coordinator in Arizona and while it’s hard to see his reach extending all the way to the Northeast, his ties could still have an impact on the region and he was the primary recruiter, so it will be interesting to see which teams get in the mix moving forward.
