Michigan football needs defensive tackle help in the 2021 recruiting class and a new offer in 2021 to Ikechukwu Iwunnah could help with that.

Now that Michigan football has a new defensive coaching staff in place, things should pick up on the recruiting trail and they already have for the class of 2021.

The Wolverines signed a number of recruits on early signing day, but Michigan football didn’t land a true defensive tackle, which is something it is working to do.

And in that effort, a new offer went out over the weekend to Iwunnah, a three-star defensive tackle recruit who is currently committed to Colorado.

Iwunnah is listed at 6-foot-4, 275 pounds but is actually said to be closer to 290 pounds. He’s a gifted athlete and one that pledged to the Buffaloes on Jan. 19.

Iwunnah is a different kind of kid, at least in terms of recruiting and he doesn’t really do much on social media. He didn’t even announce his commitment to Colorado.

So it will be interesting to see how much traction the Wolverines can gain here with just a few weeks to go before signing day. Still, he would fill a huge need and even though he’s ranked 1,187th overall in the 2021 class and 59th among defensive tackles.

Yet, Iwunnah has been offered by Baylor, Texas and Boise State among others and he’s a track-and-field athlete, which is something that adds intrigue about his athleticism.

Obviously, Michigan fans were hoping U-M would be able to flip another defensive tackle committed elsewhere in 2021 and that’s Rayshaun Benny, a Michigan State pledge.

And with Shaun Nua sticking around it’s possible, but there hasn’t been much chatter about Benny and this could be a sign that the Wolverines are putting their eggs in another basket.

2022 4-star corner re-offered by new staff

Looking ahead in the 2022 class, one of Michigan’s top targets for months has been four-star defensive back Jaeden Gould out of Bergen Catholic in New Jersey.

Gould is 6-foot-2, 190 pounds and is ranked as the No. 141 overall player in 2022, as well as the 14th-best cornerback.

He also has four crystal ball projections to Michigan with a confidence level of six and while there’s been staff turnover, new cornerbacks coach Maurice Linguist re-offered him this weekend according to Brice Marich of the Michigan Insider.

Linguist has been busy on the recruiting trail for the Wolverines but it’s good to see him building that relationship with Gould, who would be a huge get for U-M.

The Wolverines missed out on Domani Jackson over the weekend, so the attention needs to really shift to in-state corner Will Johnson and also Gould.
