Michigan Football: Gauging chances with elite 2021 CB Ceyair Wright
It’s full-speed ahead with Michigan football recruiting and the Wolverines are still in it with Ceyair Wright a top target in the 2021 recruiting class.
There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding the Michigan football program right now, especially with the departure of defensive coordinator Don Brown being announced earlier this week.
You wonder how that could impact the 2021 recruiting class, because even though most of the work is done with 20 recruits signed, the Wolverines still have some key targets left signing in the late period such as cornerback Ceyair Wright and defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny.
Wright released his final top list on Wednesday and Michigan football made it, which means the Wolverines are still in the mix. Wright also took a self-guided visit to Ann Arbor with many of the recruits that signed back in November, so that’s another positive.
The 6-foot-1 cornerback from Los Angeles, California has five crystal ball projections to USC and the Trojans have been the logical fit, but they have also signed a number of defensive backs in 2021 already, while Michigan football has added just one cornerback in Ja’Den McBurrows.
Joining USC and Michigan on the list are other contenders such as Nebraska, Notre Dame, Arizona State, Oregon and Stanford.
Of all the 2021 recruits that aren’t committed in this class, Wright’s recruitment has been one of the hardest to read. USC has always been looming but he goes to Loyola high school in LA which is the same school that produced David Long.
Wright has talked about that connection before and it’s clearly played in the Wolverines favor. A positive signing day also had to help with Wright, especially since it’s becoming clear that Jim Harbaugh is going to be back as head coach.
I do wonder how Brown’s dismissal will impact this recruitment, but Mike Zordich, the cornerbacks coach has been the point guy for the most part and there’s reason to believe he’s not going anywhere, even with a new defensive coordinator coming in for next season.
The bottom line is that whether it’s Wright or someone else, Michigan football can’t wrap up the 2021 recruiting class with just one cornerback. At the very least, if the Wolverines miss on Wright, I’d expect another late-period target to emerge, as well as the transfer portal to be hit hard.
But if Michigan can land Wright, who could have a chance to play right away next season, that would solve a huge need and add a major defensive piece to its 2021 class.
