Derek Mason

If I’m being 100 percent honest, when I heard that Brown was actually let go, my first thought went to Derek Mason, another former SEC head coach.

Like Muschamp, Mason was fired this season after a rough stint at Vanderbilt as head coach. Obviously, no one outside of James Franklin has won at Vandy, so there’s nothing to be ashamed about.

Yet, Mason, who was once at the defensive coordinator at Stanford and spent one season on the staff of Jim Harbaugh, would be an ideal fit. He understands obviously how to recruit at a place with high academic standards but is also known as a defensive guru.

His teams at Stanford were well known for playing well against Oregon and that’s what first made Mason a hot name in the coaching world. Now, the Wolverines could desperately use that kind of innovation again and at Michigan, Mason would have more talent than he’s ever had to work with.

He also has a connection to Harbaugh and if I was a betting man, I’d bet on Mason getting this job.
