The ball movement has been incredible

Last year, with Zavier Simpson, Michigan basketball ran a ton of ball-screen sets and got a lot of their points from that type of action.

This season, the ball screens aren’t going away, but it’s becoming clear that they aren’t going to be the bread-and-butter for Michigan basketball in 2020.

According to Dylan Burkhardt of UMHoops ($), the Wolverines scored just eight of their 80 points off of ball-screen plays. And when you consider Michigan assisted on 18 of its 32 makes, that tells you something about the ball movement we are seeing.

Michigan has done a great job of starting the offense with ball screens and getting good shots off that movement. And one thing about this team is that it has a bunch of very good passers.

Passing is a skill that is often overlooked in basketball but with a lot of experienced players and two freshmen who have knowledge beyond their years, this team excels at it.

Dickinson is a very skilled passer out of the post. He and Williams both have that touch. Eli Brooks is another guy who probably doesn’t get enough credit for all he does well offensively but right now the entire offense seems really in tune, despite the shortened offseason.

Now, we will see if that continues as the competition gets tougher, but so far, you have to feel good about the way the Wolverines are moving and sharing the ball.
