Michigan Football: Good news/bad news on Friday for recruiting
There was some good news for Michigan football recruiting on Friday and some bad news. Here’s the breakdown.
Friday was an interesting day for the Michigan football team, especially from a recruiting perspective as some things went against the Wolverines, who also got some good news.
Obviously, the status of head coach Jim Harbaugh is the big story surrounding Michigan football right now and it’s a prime focus of the recruiting world too.
And in the recruitment of four-star safety Isaac Thompson in the class of 2022, the uncertainty around Harbaugh definitely led to him going somewhere else.
If you didn’t see, Thompson, who at one time was projected to land at Michigan football according to the crystal balls, ended up committing to Missouri. Thompson, who is from St. Louis, is ranked No. 175 overall in 2022 and is the No. 11 safety.
When he visited Ann Arbor in mid-November and then had a decision date set, it seemed like the Wolverines were the team to beat. Harbaugh even talked to him Thursday night in an attempt to change his mind, but it didn’t work.
The fact that the Wolverines missed out on a kid to Missouri should be worrisome. Michigan had this battle locked up and without the coaching situation, would have likely won it.
That doesn’t mean I think Michigan should stick with Harbaugh. But at some point soon, Warde Manuel needs to make a decision because once again, being in limbo is hurting U-M.
The good news for Michigan football
While missing out on Thompson cost the Wolverines some much-needed momentum on the recruiting trail, they did get some good news from 2021 commit Andrel Anthony, who re-affirmed his commitment to Michigan football via Twitter, saying he would sign on Dec. 16.
There has been some worry about Anthony ever since the Michigan State loss and with Xavier Worthy now choosing between Michigan and Alabama, it will be imperative to have Anthony signed, sealed and delivered on early signing day.
Anthony is ranked as the No. 519 player in the 2022 class and the 81st wide receiver overall. He is a three-star recruit and the 14th-best player in the state of Michigan.
In other positive news, another recruit that some saw had the potential to flip, three-star safety Rod Moore out of Ohio, as said he would be signing with Michigan football Dec. 16.
Moore is actually ranked as a four-star recruit according to the 247 specific rankings, but in the 247 composite, he’s No. 497 overall and the No. 37 safety as well as the 17th-ranked player in the state of Ohio. He’s also very underrated as I’ve said on numerous occasions.
Michigan football is getting a good one in Moore and the fact that two guys who were rumored to possibly flip are staying with the Wolverines could be a good sign for the rest of the 2021 class.
