Is it time to panic about Michigan Football recruiting?

Following a brutal loss Saturday to Penn State and some other developments, it might be time to panic about Michigan football’s recruiting efforts.

Despite the fact that Michigan football has struggled mightily in the 2020 season, the Wolverines haven’t taken a huge hit on the recruiting trail — at least not yet.

But after another awful loss to winless Penn State Saturday, as well as some other developments, such as key commit Xavier Worthy taking a self-guided visit to Alabama, there is a definite reason for concern.

Worthy is ranked as the No. 73 overall prospect in the 2021 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings and the 6-foot-1 wide receiver is ranked 11th at his position.

The California recruit has drawn comparisons to Desean Jackson and his speed is legit. He would be a different kind of receiver than Michigan football has had in a long time — a true game changer so to speak.

But now, after saying he would not flip his commitment after making his pledge, it seems very likely that Worthy is going to spurn Michigan football for Alabama. Even Rivals recruiting expert EJ Holland said he would flip ($) his Futurecast pick to Bama if Rivals allowed.

As you can see, Worthy actually got to attend the Iron Bowl between Auburn and Alabama over the weekend and he saw Alabama receivers make plays all over the field, while in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines could barely throw for 100 yards against an 0-5 team.

As far as the speed-in-space offense Josh Gattis has been selling to Worthy and others, it looks more like the offense has been stuck in cement.

Can Michigan salvage Worthy and recruitments?

One thing Michigan football can sell Worthy is the hope of playing with five-star quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who would seem to have a good shot at starting next season if he signs with U-M.

Holland indicated he still feels good about McCarthy, even if a coaching change is made. Yet, Worthy feels like he already has one foot out the door.

Jaydon Hood, a four-star linebacker committed to Michigan football is another that is expected to decommit at some point.  He didn’t follow through with his expected visit to Ann Arbor and there just seems to be a parting of the ways.

After that, it’s hard to say what could happen. I’m very worried about Andrel Anthony and Michigan State, especially since the Spartans just beat No. 8 Northwestern, on the road.

If Worthy goes, that could hurt Michigan’s chances with Anthony and then, all of a sudden, the wide receiver class that was once loaded has just one commit in Christian Dixon.

Michigan may hold the crystal ball lead for Donovan Edwards, but with less than a month to go before signing day, that recruitment could be in trouble too.

As long as Michigan holds onto McCarthy, that will stop the class from being a total disaster, but if the Wolverines miss on Worthy and Edwards, after also missing on Rocco Spindler and Rayshaun Benny, it will be hard to call this class a success.
