Jeff Hafley

Another candidate I really like is current Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley. You will notice the connection to Ohio and that’s a definite theme of this list.

Hafley was an assistant with the Buckeyes and was co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach for OSU before taking the head coaching job with BC.

He’s also been an assistant at Rutgers and Pittsburgh, along with spending time in the NFL before returning to college to coach under Ryan Day. However, in his one year with OSU, he did a solid job recruiting and has put together a pretty good class for Boston College too.

Hafley has ties to New Jersey and that could help the Wolverines continue to recruit well there too, as well as other places in the Northeast, but hopefully, it could lead to in-roads in Ohio too.

No matter how you slice it, Michigan football needs to recruit better in the Midwest and Hafley could do that even though he’s not as proven as Campbell or Fickell.

Of course, the fact that Hafley has just one year as head coach is a concern and he may not want to leave BC after a single season. Yet, he makes a lot of sense and if Campbell and Fickell say no, Hafley is the first guy I would target next.
