How long can Jim Harbaugh and Michigan Football go on like this?

Michigan football suffered another embarrassing loss and it’s hard to see how this program can go forward with Jim Harbaugh as head coach.

Flat, lifeless and devoid of enthusiasm aren’t things you ever thought you would say about a Michigan football team coached by Jim Harbaugh. But over and over again, that’s what we have seen and the Wolverines were a lifeless bunch as they fell to 0-3 against Penn State Saturday.

The Nittany Lions, who were winless coming into this one, took the opening drive down the field for a touchdown and that set the tone for the day. Even Penn State, with its fourth-string running back and its embattled starting QB weren’t afraid of the Wolverines.

In fact, for four quarters, they simply looked like the better team and it’s a story that has become all too familiar for Michigan football fans.

Following last week’s dramatic win over Rutgers, there was hope that Michigan found something in quarterback Cade McNamara who threw for 260 yards and accounted for five touchdowns.

Yet, after an injury in the first quarter, McNamara was never the same and the fact that U-M continued to trot him out there when he could barely throw tells you all you need to know about Joe Milton and his future.

Whether it was just the injured arm or not, McNamara wasn’t good enough Saturday and truthfully, the Wolverines weren’t good enough in any phase of the game to win.

Michigan football fell on its face again

Michigan fumbled on special teams, it couldn’t move the ball on offense and the defense played awful, just as it has all season allowing more than 400 yards of total offense.

If it wasn’t for a couple of red zone stops and a missed field goal, Michigan would have allowed more than 30 points and it did surrender 27 or more for the fifth straight game.

Hassan Haskins who rushed for more than 100 yards and two touchdowns was one of the few bright spots, along with some young and talented offense lineman. Ronnie Bell made a few plays and A.J. Henning made a spectacular catch but outside of that, it was a poor effort.

The defense didn’t hit hard and didn’t run to the ball. Kwity Paye was back but didn’t make a huge impact and apparently, there isn’t anyone on the defense who wants to tackle.

Essentially, it was a repeat of what we have seen over and over this season. The offense has no identity and no playmakers. The defense is simply incapable of making impact plays — sacks and turnovers — and it’s a killer.

At this point, it’s clear that changes need to be made. Even if Jim Harbaugh doesn’t get fired, the defensive coordinator needs to go.

Any hopes of a bowl game are gone and that’s probably a good thing. You can make a legit case that Michigan is as bad as any team in the Big Ten and there is zero reason to expect another win during this miserable 2020 season.
