Michigan Football: 5 Reasons Jim Harbaugh isn’t going anywhere
5. Firing Harbaugh is a big risk
Even if Jim Harbaugh was fired as Michigan football coach, that doesn’t magically make everything suddenly perfect in Ann Arbor.
Everyone thought Harbaugh was going to the savior too and after seeing him struggle, you really think elite level coaches will be busting down the door? And for the people actually thinking Urban Meyer would take the job, get a clue, he won’t even use the letter M.
The point is be careful what you wish for because Michigan could fire Harbaugh and then someday live to regret it.
Look at Nebraska, a program that fired two head coaches after nine-win seasons in Frank Solich and Bo Pelini. Yes, the two coaches won just one conference title between them, although Pelini won a few division titles too, including one in the Big Ten, but it wasn’t enough.
And since Pelini was fired, Nebraska hasn’t sniffed a nine-win season. Heck, the Huskers can’t even put together a winning record and looking back, maybe it wasn’t the best move.
Getting rid of Harbaugh could have similar consequences. It would certainly put the 2021 recruiting class at risk and spoil all the positive momentum in 2022 too.
While there is no doubt Harbaugh needs to turn things around, there is a very good chance he will still be the Wolverines head coach in 2021 and beyond.
