2. Get Milton out of the pocket
Joe Milton has not looked comfortable in the last two games. As cool and calm as he looked against Minnesota, it has been the complete opposite the last two weeks. The Spartans pressured him early and often and it has got him all sorts of messed up.
On top of that, the offensive line has not been great. Couple that together and it makes for a very stagnant offense that can’t put together drives when it matters.
To combat that, they need to get Milton moving. Get him out of the pocket on bootlegs or RPO plays and let him use his athletic ability to make plays. He has shown the ability to run and to throw on the run.
Milton has not shown to be a great pocket passer, so they need to play to his strengths. Get him out and let him see the field and run if it is there. To drop him back over and over again just isn’t smart. He either has no time or he has missed his receivers.
Milton has a huge arm but accuracy has been a big issue. But on designed rollouts or RPO he seems to be more comfortable. It isn’t rocket science into what works best for him, they just need to play to his strengths.
If they can allow Milton to use his ability and at the same time keep the offensive line from having to block for long periods of time it should benefit the Wolverines. If they just have him drop back all game, it will be another long night.
