As expected, Michigan football is starting to take a hit recruiting and now a top target in 2022 is trending to Notre Dame.

It’s tough being a Michigan football fan right now. Not only have the Wolverines played awful the last two weeks and suffered two of the worst defeats of the Jim Harbaugh era, but elsewhere, rivals are thriving.

Of course, Ohio State has been on a roll for years and nothing seems to be stopping that train as it rolls towards another Big Ten title and College Football Playoff berth.

But Notre Dame has also been on a roll of late and with its overtime win over No. 1 Clemson on Saturday, the Irish should start gaining more momentum on the recruiting trail. In fact, they already have and it’s coming at the expense of the Wolverines.

Michigan football’s loss to Michigan State already cost them dearly in the Rayshaun Benny sweepstakes and more games like the one against Indiana Saturday won’t help.

Michigan football’s struggles have impacted recruiting

Now though, the recruiting problems could be starting to show in the 2022 class as top target Sebastian Cheeks is now trending to Notre Dame.

Cheeks is an outside linebacker from Evanston, Illinois and he’s ranked 150th overall in the 247 sports composite rankings.

The Wolverines have been in strong contention for Cheeks and appeared to be among the handful of favorites at one time, maybe even ahead of Notre Dame.

But now that the Irish are trending in one direction and Michigan football is clearly going in the other, Cheeks has picked up crystal ball picks from Tom Loy and Steve Wiltfong. Both were predicted with a confidence level of six out of 10.

Surely, there was more than went into that than just one game, but the differences between Notre Dame, which is undefeated and ranked in the top three and Michigan football is stark, especially considering the Wolverines 30-point win over the Irish just one year ago.

The 2021 class seems pretty solid, although there is some definite concern about wide receiver Andrel Anthony, who is from East Lansing and tweeted some ominous things following Michigan State’s win in Ann Arbor.

And following another embarrassing defeat, more recruits could be worried about the Wolverines, even though Michigan State also lost 49-7, so maybe the results aren’t all that important.

We know that Benny is likely to choose Michigan State when he makes his decision today and also last week, top in-state 2022 target Dillon Tatum, also started trending to Michigan State.

So things, in general, are not good with Michigan football on the recruiting trail and until things turn around the field, that’s not likely to change.
