Michigan Football: Possible replacements for Harbaugh
There are a lot out there that want Michigan to get out of the thinking that they need a Michigan man to lead their football program. But there are a few options out there if they still wanted to go that way. The first is a beloved running back and the other is a quarterback you may have forgotten about.
Mike Hart – Running Backs Coach, Indiana Hoosiers
Ask Wolverine fans who their favorite running back of all time is and a lot of them would probably say, Mike Hart. He was an undersized back with a lot of heart that was one of the best to play in a Michigan uniform.
What they may or may not know is that he has become a very good assistant for the Indiana Hoosiers. After stints at Eastern and Western Michigan and then Syracuse, Hart has found himself as one of Tom Allen’s top assistants. He has developed a stable of running backs from Indiana and is been very good on the recruiting trail.
Hart is a Michigan man and one that could be working his way up for a chance to be a college head coach. It would be a huge risk taking someone with no head coaching experience, better yet no coordinator experience. But Hart knows Michigan, he knows the area and the fans love him.
Nick Sheridan – Offensive Coordinator, Indiana Hoosiers
You don’t have to go far to find the other Michigan man that could be a possibility. Sheridan is currently the offensive coordinator at Indiana and is starting to gain some traction as a possible head coach sooner than later.
He is a young guy (just 32 years old) but has moved rapidly up the coaching ladder in the college game. This is his first year as offensive coordinator for the Hoosiers, but in case you didn’t notice he just did a number on the Wolverines.
Sheridan was a walk-on for Michigan who received a scholarship his junior year and started four games his senior year. He wasn’t a great player but put his time in and was a great teammate.
He has shown those same qualities as a college coach and will be roaming the sidelines as a head guy soon.
Is he ready to be a head coach yet? That is the big question and would the Wolverines want to take a chance on him.
But we have seen young guys be successful, most notably Sean McVay with the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL. Age shouldn’t be a problem, it would be just if is he ready to lead a big-time program.
If you don’t want another Michigan man leading the team, then that is a valid point, but if you do then Sheridan might just be that guy,
Because the only other big name out there is Les Miles, and we probably don’t want to go down that road.
