Why Michigan wins No. 2: The ground game

The running game wasn’t great against Michigan State, even though when it was all said and done, the Wolverines out-gained MSU on the ground.

While there’s no question that Michigan has a talented stable of running backs, it would be nice to see someone get at least 10 attempts that isn’t named Joe Milton.

This week, I think we’ll see that and with Indiana and it’s run defense that ranks 10th in the Big Ten after two games and is allowing 4.4 yards per attempt. Beyond that, the Indiana defense has intercepted five passes in two games, so that could be another incentive to proud the rock.

On the defensive side of the ball, the question is going to be how Michigan can slow the Indiana passing attack?

One thing that will help is forcing the Hoosiers into a bunch of third-and-long situations. Indiana is worst in the Big Ten at third-down conversion rate and right now, it’s also the worst rushing team in the league.

So if Michigan can force them into predictable situations, it should make it easier on the defensive backs and against the Hoosiers, there should be no reason to stack the box.
