Grading Michigan Football’s offense after win against Gophers
By Adam Childs
Quarterback A
Joe Milton beat out Dylan McCaffrey and Cade McNamara to win the starting spot under center for the Wolverines and at least for one night it looked like the absolute right decision.
Milton’s numbers won’t jump out at you like Justin Fields from that other school, but he ran the offense very efficiently and looked calm all night long.
The biggest takeaway is that he didn’t turn the ball over. He did make one pass into double coverage, but besides that he made great decisions all night long. He took what the defense gave him and wasn’t afraid to run when needed.
Michigan football called designed runs for him and like a running back he was patient to find his hole and then showed explosiveness to get through said holes and get a big gain It was what we hoped to see from Shea Patterson the last couple years and rarely got.
We all heard about how good Milton’s arm was and he showed it last night. The throws across the middle look effortless, but probably more impressive was the throw he made on the run late in the first half. It may have been incomplete but running to his left he flicked the ball 45 yards in the air with little trouble. It was the kind of the throw that will get Wolverines fans excited for what is too come.
The biggest thing for Milton last night was that he didn’t try and force anything by relying on his arm too much. Sometimes when you have a big arm you think you can make spectacular plays and they backfire. Last night he didn’t do that and that is a great sign.
If he can keep running the offense as well as he did last night the Wolverines are going to be in great shape. He has the talent to be a great quarterback for the Wolverines, but they need him to protect the ball and make the right decisions. Last night he did that and more.
Milton was the right guy to be the starter and Michigan fans should be excited about what he can bring to the table.
