Michigan Football: 3 keys for Wolverines to beat Minnesota
By Adam Childs
3. Get Milton involved
While it hasn’t been officially announced, Milton should be the starting quarterback for the Wolverines when they take the field on Saturday. Every report out of fall camp is that he is ready and is making all types of ridiculous throws.
This is all great, but until he does it on the field there are going to be questions about what he can do. He has shown some flashes of his big arm in limited time the last two years, but this is the year he needs to bust out if the Wolverines hope to make any kind of splash in the Big Ten.
We all know that Harbaugh loves to run the ball and that works to set up the pass, but it would be in the best interest of the Michigan coaching staff to work a gameplan in early to let Milton take charge. Just turning and handing the ball off is not what he needs.
We aren’t saying to abandon the run, but the quicker you can get Milton involved and comfortable in this game the more confidence he will get, and in turn the better the offense will look.
Take a chance or two and use that big arm of his and try and hit some plays to bring some excitement early to the offense.
Everybody keeps talking about what type of throws he can make. Use the receiver’s speed and let Milton show it off and find his place.
If Milton can get this offense going early they are going to be tough to stop. While running the ball could still be a big part of the gameplan, unleashing Milton early is the best thing to do.
Some may argue about not letting him make mistakes early, but with his arm, take the reigns off and let him play. The offense will be much better if you allow that and it will in turn give the Wolverines the edge in this game.
Milton has also shown he can use his legs and if you can gameplan to take full advantage of everything Milton has to offer, the Wolverines offense could be really good. But again you can’t do that unless you let him play. Get Milton going early and Michigan will come away with a huge road victory.
