Michigan Football extended an offer to 2022 quarterback Charlie Mirer, plus the Wolverines showed interest in a grad transfer and here’s what it means.

When it comes to recruiting, everybody knows that the quarterback position is a little different and so it was interesting to see Michigan football extend another QB offer Wednesday.

And Michigan football fans will likely recognize the name of the kid, at least his last name, because Charlie Mirer, who announced his U-M offer on Twitter Wednesday, is the son of former Notre Dame quarterback Rick Mirer.

Mirer is from San Diego and is listed on his 247 sports profile at 6-foot-6. However, the pro-style passer isn’t rated and as of now, Michigan is his first major offer.

Mirer is the 16th quarterback Michigan has offered in the 2022 cycle and at first glance, he wouldn’t appear to be a top target at this point. 247 sports list him as a scout look.

The top targets on the board, according to 247 sports, are MJ Morris and Maalik Murphy, who is a five-star quarterback out of California. Ty Simpson and Gavin Wimsatt are also in the top target range, as is Nicco Marchiol, who the Wolverines have started recruiting hard again.

With five-star J.J. McCarthy committed in the 2021 class, it can be difficult to sign another high-ranking recruit in the next class. It seems like Murphy, Morris, Wimsatt and Marchiol are the most realistic possibilities.

However, we shouldn’t rule out a kid like Mirer for a couple of reasons. The Wolverines ended up with Dan Villari in 2019 after JD Johnson suffered a career-ending injury. So it’s important to have those guys to evaluate and pursue if top targets don’t work out.

Obviously, the junior film, when California plays high school football, will be critical if we’ll see if Mirer gets himself rated at some point, not that recruiting rankings matter to the coaching staff.

His name will be one to watch. He’s got the size and obviously, the NFL bloodlines and that seems to be worth at least a deeper evaluation.

Michigan football expresses interest in graduate transfer

The Wolverines don’t get involved a ton in the transfer market, but that could change with former Louisiana Tech offensive tackle Willie Allen, who put his name in the transfer portal this week.

And according to Josh Newberg of 247 sports ($), Michigan has been among the teams in contact with Allen, here’s what the offensive tackle said:

"“I’ve heard from Florida State, Michigan, Syracuse, Maryland, Rutgers, Colorado State, there’s been a lot of them. I’ve been a part of this process before, so this time it’s all business. I want to earn what I get. I also want to do what I need to do to get my masters.”"

Allen was a three-star recruit out of high school and is listed at 6-foot-7. The interest of Michigan is a little curious, but there was talk of U-M wanting another O-lineman in 2021, so maybe another veteran body wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Starting right tackle Jalen Mayfield is likely heading to the NFL after this season. Left tackle Ryan Hayes shouldn’t be following, but he probably has an NFL future down the road too.

After that, the Wolverines don’t have anyone with experience outside of Andrew Stueber, so it’s possible Allen, who will be eligible next fall could push for a starting job or be a swing tackle.

Overall, I’m surprised in the interest in Allen, but it’s something to keep tabs on at any rate.
