Joe Milton is the real deal

The biggest takeaway from fall camp and even going back farther is that Milton is the real deal. Many expected Michigan’s quarterback battle to push into the season, with Dylan McCaffrey maybe getting the nod early due to experience.

However, the battle between Milton and McCaffrey never seemed to be that close, which is likely why Dylan put his name in the transfer portal and opted out of 2020. The writing was on the wall, especially with Milton’s vast improvement.

That right there tells you something about Milton’s game. McCaffrey is no slouch and I wouldn’t be shocked if he ended up starting in the Pac-12 or somewhere else. But Milton, a redshirt sophomore, was clearly better. We heard those rumblings and McCaffrey’s choice confirmed it.

Of course, we still need to be cautious, but there is a real feeling that Milton will finally be the quarterback Harbaugh and company have needed to compete with the elites of college football.

Milton can throw and he can run, as evidenced by a 30-yard run in a live scrimmage with the defense last Saturday and he’s easily the most talented QB Michigan’s had under Harbaugh. But until Michigan fans actually see Milton do it consistently, there will continue to be doubts.
