No. 5 Woodson helps Michigan win showdown vs Penn State

Obviously, this is subjective and no two Michigan football fans will rank it the same way, but one game that absolutely stands out to me in the national title/Heisman campaign was a 34-8 stomping of second-ranked Penn State.

You will notice a theme of the 1997 season in this list, but this game includes one of Woodson’s best offensive plays. While he did notch a pair of pass breakups and was essential in Michigan shutting out No. 2 Penn State until late in the fourth quarter, his play as wideout stands out.

With the Wolverines leading 10-0 in the second quarter, Woodson hauled in a 37-yard touchdown pass that put Michigan in front 17-0. Eventually, U-M would lead 34-0 in a game that solidified their status as a national championship contender.

Going into the game, Michigan football was No. 4. and Penn State was ranked second and people still didn’t believe if Michigan was for real. After this game, the Wolverines would be ranked No. 1 in the AP poll and they would hold that ranking the rest of the way.
