Michigan Football: In-depth breakdown of cornerback depth chart
Dax Hill and the freshmen impact
One freshman I’ve been very bullish on is 5-foot-8 cornerback Andre Seldon. He’s not a big guy, but he has all the tools to be an exceptional slot and he’s got tremendous ball skills.
Unfortunately, an injury has slowed his progress and while I do believe there’s still a chance he can emerge this season, it’s going to make it tougher to get on the field against Minnesota.
The other contenders are all 6-foot or taller, which isn’t a bad thing at all, but it can cause problems in the slot when you have to cover quick-twitch athletes, which could be why the Wolverines are looking to utilize Hill and his 4.3 speed in the slot more.
The other true freshman I love is Darion Green-Warren. Michigan football added him late in the 2020 class and along with Seldon, he’s one of U-M’s best gets at the position in years.
Someday, both Green-Warren and Seldon will be starters and each will be in the mix this season along with Perry and Turner.
Right now, Hill, Gray and Brad Hawkins have jobs locked up in the secondary, but as far as the second safety (if Dax plays corner) or the second and third corners, things are still wide open.
If the game against Minnesota was tomorrow, I believe we would see Gray, Hill, Hawkins and Green as the secondary starters in the base defense.
In sub-packages, Hill will likely bump down to the slot and will be replaced at safety by Makari Paige or Sammy Faustin. The other corner spot, in my opinion, will rotate early among Green, Perry and Turner, maybe even Green-Warren until someone emerges and truly earns it.
