Michigan Football: In-depth breakdown of cornerback depth chart
In-depth on Gemon Green
We haven’t talked a ton about Green in the cornerback battle but according to Brown, he has emerged as a clear threat to start week one.
Looking back at his recruitment, Green was a top-500 recruit and was a three-star coming out of Texas, rated as the No. 35 cornerback in the 2018 class.
His size is obviously a plus at 6-foot-2 and if he were to start alongside Gray, that would give Michigan football some length on the outside. However, Gray isn’t as quick as Thomas and I don’t know enough about Green’s coverage ability to comment on his speed.
He has spent most of his time at Michigan on special teams, which means he’s not afraid to mix it up and make a tackle, which is essential playing for Don Brown. You have to be physical and ready to tackle in the run game.
Green fits that mold and he also seems to have more experience, which could be the reason he has the edge over others. Yet, it doesn’t sound clear cut at all, so he will have to hold off the push from others and that’s where we go next as we look at the young guys in the mix for playing time.
